KT&C, a Korean company specializing in video security systems, has earned the South Korean government’s accreditation for its patented remote iris recognition technology widening the sensing distance to one meter.

The company was recently granted a New Excellent Product (NEP) certification from Korean Agency for Technology and Standards under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy for its iris recognition system with a significantly improved sensing range.

The NEP accreditation has been awarded to only about 1,000 products in Korea in the past 20 years, and KT&C’s technology is the first in iris recognition.

KT&C’s new iris recognition solution increases the sensing distance of existing products from only 40 cm to a maximum of 1 meter and improves the recognition angle by 20-30 percent wider, according to the company.

Thanks to the NEP certification, KT&C expects sales of iris recognition devices to grow significantly. Public institutions must constitute 20 percent of its supply purchases with NEP certified products under related regulations, which would apply the same to KT&C’s iris recognition solution.

Contactless interaction is still preferred even in the post-Covid era, making iris recognition a good alternative authentication solution to other biometric authentication technology. Export inquiries from the U.S. and Europe are already flooding in, according to the company.

There is no complicated installation process for the new device, KT&C explained, adding that it can be installed in the place where the existing biometric recognition device used to be.

The company said it set a sales target of 10 billion won for its iris recognition device business next year.

KT&C is working on more advanced sensing technology. It has already developed a technology that can recognize human iris from a distance of 2 meters. Its ultimate goal is to develop a technology that can recognize iris even in a walking-through state, as seen in the movie ‘Minority Report'.
