South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Corp. would have shoulder extra wage payments of approximately 10.7 billion won ($7.5 million) to in-house subcontract workers who have worked more than two years at their plants for indirect processes under the final court ruling.

The Seoul Supreme Court on Thursday partially confirmed the lower court ruling and ordered Hyundai Motor and Kia to pay the bulk of extra pay demands from 400 subcontract workers who claimed the companies are under obligation to directly hire them.

The two carmakers lost in the 12 years-long legal battle over the workers’ status with about 400 subcontract workers.

With the ruling, Hyundai Motor and Kia will have to directly hire the in-house subcontract workers who have worked more than two years and pay them 10.7 billion won, the gap between payments to direct workers and indirect workers.
