OLED employment broadening to aircrafts and cars to the boon of panel maker LG

Employment of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) is fast expanding to the mobility sphere ranging from automobiles and trains to aircrafts thanks to its flexible and transparent features, boding well for Korea’s dominant producer LG Display.

According to industry sources on Sunday, U.S. aviation service provider Jet Aviation recently unveiled a private jet equipped with three 55-inch curved OLED screens on the either side above the window line in a VIP interior.

The screens, supplied by LG Display, are to show flight information such as the route, altitude and weather. Jet Aviation has successfully installed the curved OLED screens after eight years of research and development.

Another U.S. aviation company Rosen Aviation also announced recently that it would add LG Display’s OLED panels in 65 and 77 inches to its aircraft cabins by next year. The panels have halved weight and reduced thickness for sleek cabin design, it said.

OLED is behind various form factors – transparent, rollable and foldable devices, making it possible to provide a unique interior to realize different passenger experiences. It is also lighter than liquid crystal display (LCD) so it can help significantly reduce the weight of aircrafts and maximize the space of interior.

The use of OLED panels in various vehicles has been rapidly growing since 2019, with major finished carmakers like Mercedes-Benz, GM, Cadillac and Hyundai Motor applying plastic OLEDs to its vehicles for digital cockpits.

The automotive OLED market is estimated to grow at an annual rate of 42 percent, hitting $670 million by 2025 from $160 million in 2022.
