SK hynix develops world's first CXL-based CMS

SK hynix has become the industry’s first to integrate computational functions into compute express link (CXL) memory with the development of CXL-based CMS memory, just two months after developing next-generation DRAM CXL memory sample in August for the first time in the industry.

The firm unveiled its CMS prototype and software platform based on the solution at the 2022 OCP Global Summit in San Jose, U.S., on Tuesday (local time).

CXL is a new interconnect technology created for efficiently using the central processing unit (CPU), graphics processing unit (GPU), and memory in high-performance computing systems. The firm’s CMS, based on CXL’s advantage in expanding high-capacity memory, provides machine learning and data filtering—functions mostly used in big data analysis.

“CXL has created an opportunity for memory providers. With the development of CMS, we can deliver faster computing performance,” said Park Kyoung, vice president of research. After performance improvement, SK hynix plans to embed various computing functions beyond big data applications.

Its CMS will be demonstrated at the SK Tech Summit 2022 early next month after its debut at the OCP Global Summit.
