Hyundai Mobis will supply chassis modules for four Mercedes-Benz electric SUVs.

The deal between Mobis and Mercedes-Benz AG is the Korean company's second massive deal with a foreign automaker, though the specific details about the investment have not been disclosed. Mobis started supplying modules to Chrysler in 2006, which is now known as Stellantis.

Mobis has built a dedicated facility for this deal in McCalla, Alabama, which has been fully operational since July.

The McCalla plant is Mobis' fifth plant in the United States. It operates plants in Alabama and Georgia to produce modules for Hyundai Motor and Kia, and in Michigan and Ohio for Stellantis.

Chassis-module is a generic term for the parts assembled under the car body including the steering, braking and suspension system, Mobis said. It also refers to the set of parts for these systems assembled on the frame.

“We hope to maintain long-term partnerships with Mercedes-Benz AG,” said Hyundai Mobis CEO Sung Hwan Cho. “We intend to increase trust with customers based on our excellent technical experience and stable supply capacity.”

Since 1999, Mobis has produced three types of modules: cockpit-modules, front-end modules and chassis modules. The company is currently operating a total of 28 module production sites, eight in Korea and 20 overseas.

It set a goal to log $3.75 billion of orders from overseas this year — around 70 percent has already been met in the first half, Mobis said.
