[김대균의 영어산책] 건강에 대한 속담과 표현으로 배우는 영어
An apple a day keeps the doctor away. (하루에 한 개씩 사과를 먹으면 의사가 멀어진다)
Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. (일찍 자고 일찍 일어나면 건강해지고 부자가 되고 현명해진다)
The beginning of health is sleep. (건강의 시작은 잠이다)
Health is not valued till sickness comes. (건강의 가치는 아프고 나서야 소중해진다)
Prevention is better than cure / an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. (예방이 치료보다 낫다/1온스의 예방이 1파운드의 치료가치가 있다)
A stitch in time saves nine. (제 때 한 바늘을 꿰매는 것이 나중에 9바늘의 수고를 덜어준다)
You are what you eat. (당신은 당신이 먹은 그대로의 모습이다)
A tri-color meal is a good deal. (3색음식이 좋다)
의미: Eat red, yellow and green fruits and vegetables. (빨간색 노란색, 녹색과일과 채소를 먹어라)
Joyfulness is half your health. (즐거움이 당신 건강의 50%이다)
A good laugh and a long sleep are the best cures in the doctor’s book. (좋은 웃음과 긴 잠이 의서에 최고 처방이다)
Good health is the sister of beauty. (좋은 건강은 아름다움과 자매이다)
A healthy man is a successful man. (건강한 사람은 성공하 사람이다)
If you want to live long, be healthy, drink like a dog and eat like a cat. (장수하고 건강하고 싶으면 개처럼 마시고 고양이처럼 먹어라)
An imaginary ailment is worse than a disease. (상상속의 가상의 병이 실제 병보다 더 나쁘다)
Better a healthy donkey than a consumptive philosopher. (건강한 당나귀가 되는 것이 폐병 걸린 철학자 보다 더 낫다.)
이 문장에서 consumptive는 폐병으로 고생하는 (사람)[(a person) suffering from consumption]! consumption은 소비의 의미로 많이 쓰이지만 옛날에는 몸을 소진시켜 죽게하는 병, 즉 폐결핵의 의미로 많이 사용되었다! 오늘 연재에서 이 단어만은 꼭 암기해두자!
ex) She didn't live very long - she was (a) consumptive. (그녀는 오래 못살았다. 그녀는 폐병환자였다)
A good husband is healthy and absent.(훌륭한 남편은 건강하고 집에 없다)
B: 건강에 관한 표현 공부와 예문
아래 글은 속담으로는 만족을 못하는 학구적인 독자들을 위한 내용이다. 다음의 표현들을 익히고 문장을 읽어보자. 모두 자주 쓰는 표현들이다.
To feel under the weather – to feel ill(몸이 아픈)
To look like death warmed over (American English) / to look like death warmed up (British English) – to look very ill(매우 아파 보이는)
To recharge one’s batteries – to rest so that you can get your energy back(몸을 회복하기 위해 쉬다)
To feel off-color – to feel slightly ill(조금 아픈)
To be on the road to recovery – to be recovering (from sth.) (회복중)
To be on the mend – to be recovering(회복중)
To be as fit as a fiddle – to be very healthy(매우 건강한)
To be as right as rain – to be healthy again(다시 건강해진)
Darren had been feeling under the weather for a few weeks. One day she came to work looking like death warmed over and all her colleagues told her to take sick leave* and recharge her batteries. After one day at home, she no longer felt off-color and very soon she knew she was on her road to recovery. She was happy to be on the mend. By the end of the week, she returned to work as fit as a fiddle, and she’s been as right as rain ever since. To put on weight – to gain weight(살이 찌다)
To do up the jacket – to button or zip the jacket(재킷 단추를 채우다/지퍼를 올리다)
To turn over a new leaf – to start behaving in a better way(더 착하게 행동하다)
To sign up for something – to arrange to do a course, join a group, etc. by adding your name to a list of people doing it(등록하다)
To cut down on something – to eat/drink/use less of something(먹을 것/마실 것/사용을 줄이다)
To cut out something – to stop eating/drinking something(중단하다)
It was hard going – it needed a lot of effort(많은 노력이 필요했다)
To keep to the diet – to stick to the diet(다이어트를 잘 지키다)
To fall off – to decrease in quantity or quality(질이나 양이 줄어들다)
To work out – to exercise(운동하다)
To fill someone up – (of food) to make someone feel completely full(배부르다고 느낄 정도로 먹다)
To show something off – to show people something you are proud of(뽐내다)
To face up to something – to accept and deal with something that is difficult(정면으로 마주하다)
