Hope and doubts in the LGBT community as Singapore prepares to repeal law that bans gay sex

After almost a century in force, Singapore is preparing to repeal a law inherited from British colonial rule - section 377A that criminalizes sex between men. The decision was announced by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in a televised speech in August 2022, an expected decision that generated much joy, but also doubts in the LGBT community of the conservative city state. In the same speech, Lee said the government will amend the Constitution to ensure the definition of marriage as one between a man and a woman, which would effectively make it more difficult for same-sex marriage to be legalised.
