Samsung tapped to supply 5G equipment to U.S. top cable operator Comcast

South Korea’s Samsung Electronics would equip Comcast, the largest cable operator in the United States, in 5G solutions to back its value-added mobile connectivity services.

The Korean IT giant will deliver various communication equipment to Comcast, including 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) solutions for 3.5GHz Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) spectrum and 600MHz and a newly developed 5G CBRS Strand Small Cell that can be deployed on Comcast’s aerial cable lines, according its press statement.

The Strand Small Cell is an integrated solution that provides base station, radio, and antenna functions in one form factor with Samsung’s latest 5G modem chip to make base stations more compact and lightweight, while significantly improving the data processing capacity by about two times compared to the existing product.

With this product, cable operators can easily install base stations on existing lines, reducing their physical footprint, with power consumption down by up to 50 percent per cell on the latest second-generation 5G modem chip installed, according to Samsung.

Samsung Electronics said that the new order will serve as a bridgehead for its entrance into the 5G mobile communication market for U.S. cable operators in the future, while further cementing its position as a key supplier of mobile communication equipment in the country.

Samsung Electronics and Comcast successfully completed a field test to build a 5G commercial network in the U.S. earlier this year, and they plan to provide high-quality 5G commercial services such as video streaming, multimedia file transfer, and online games from 2023.
