Samsung Electronics won an order from Comcast, the largest cable provider in the U.S., to supply 5G network equipment of an unspecified value.

Samsung Electronics won an order from Comcast, the largest cable provider in the U.S., to supply 5G network equipment of an unspecified value.

The electronics maker said Thursday that Comcast had ordered 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) systems, which are needed to allow 5G wireless connectivity to devices.

The equipment will support the spectrums being used by Comcast including the 600 megahertz band and the Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) range.

Comcast offers its cellular network service through Xfinity Mobile, a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that piggybacks on the existing networks of the major carriers.

The network equipment is small in size and compatible with existing infrastructure from other companies, Samsung explained. Comcast will not have to build cell towers.

“With this partnership, Samsung continues to build on its wireless technology leadership in commercial 5G,” said Mark Louison, Executive Vice President and Head of Networks Business at Samsung Electronics America. “We look forward to helping Comcast advance its goals in delivering best-in-class 5G mobile services for their Xfinity Mobile and Comcast Business customers,” he said.

Comcast noted that the new equipment aligns with its business strategy.

“Our capital-light approach to providing enhanced 5G connectivity in service areas where we have a high concentration of traffic and cable infrastructure is smart for our business,” said Tom Nagel, Senior Vice President of Wireless Strategy at Comcast, "and even better for customers, who will benefit from broader coverage and industry-leading speeds and prices."
