Korea Institute of Energy Technology (KENTECH) has launched its first large-scale energy research project since the school¡¯s inauguration in March this year to explore a new power grid ensuring efficient supply of renewable energy to right places at the right time. The school also plans to build the country¡¯s first carbon-neutral campus based on this research.

KENTECH said on Monday it kicked off a five-year R&D project in partnership with five private and public organizations including LS Electric Co. The research named Green Hub Station is to create a reservoir where renewable energy is stored and to quickly distribute it to right locations through an artificial intelligence algorithm. This study aims to optimally reduce the storage capacity by sending power to where it is needed in a timely manner, said KENTECH Vice Chancellor for Research Park Chin-ho, adding that it will be able to avoid the typical capacity challenge in the supply process as the power distribution does not exceed the power line limit.

This is a technology that distributes power according to the power line capacity and stores any excess power. One of the earliest applications of Green Hub Station is to create transform KENTECH into a carbon-neutral campus.

According to the government¡¯s plan announced last month, renewable energy generation in Korea is expected to account for 21.5 percent in 2030.
