Hanwha Q Cells, Samsung to sell heaters to Europe

Hanwha Q Cells, a solar energy division of Hanwha Solutions, said Thursday that it will start selling its eco-friendly heating systems in Europe with Samsung Electronics, as the continent faces a looming energy crisis.

Hanwha Q Cells, a solar energy division of Hanwha Solutions, said Thursday that it will start selling its eco-friendly heating systems in Europe with Samsung Electronics, as the continent faces a looming energy crisis.

The two companies have developed an eco-friendly heating system combining Hanwha Solutions’ solar energy modules and Samsung Electronics’ heat pump system.

A heat pump transfers heat from one place to another using electricity. It is considered an energy-efficient alternative to fossil fuel-powered heating devices. As Europe faces an energy crisis due to Russia cutting of gas supplies, alternatives such as heat pump systems may be needed in the region.

In a REPowerEU strategy announced in May, the European Union set a goal of deploying 50 million heat pumps by 2030, compared to the current 17 million.

Homeowners can use Hanwha Q Cells’ energy management application to monitor their electricity consumption.

Samsung Electronics’ SmartThings Energy app will also enable people to control and monitor home appliances and the heating system with a smartphone. At the IFA 2022 tech fair held in Berlin from Sept. 2 to 6, the electronics maker introduced its "net zero home" system concept that connect the SmartThings system with Hanwha Q Cells solar panels and energy storage system.

“We will contribute to cutting heating costs in Europe, which is facing possibly the worst energy crisis this winter, with the technology combining solar panels and heat pumps,” said Hanwha Q Cells in a release.
