Although “Squid Game” star Lee Jung-jae took the spotlight on Monday as the winner of the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, it was 77-year-old actor Oh Young-soo who commanded the dance floor during the event’s after-party.
A 35-second video clip featuring Oh getting his groove on to the R&B song “Leave the Door Open” by Anderson Paak and Bruno Mars is going viral online. The video, uploaded to Twitter by American children’s book author Meena Harris on Sept. 13, was seen by more than 510,000 people, retweeted nearly 4,000 times and got more than 9,000 likes as of Wednesday morning.
The Emmy after-party attendants surround and cheer for Oh as he shows off various dance moves, including a robot dance perhaps unfit for the soulful song.
Oh was nominated for supporting actor in Netflix's dystopian hit "Squid Game" (2021) during the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards held Sunday in Los Angeles. Though Oh did not win the award, “Squid Game” was able to grab two awards out of 14 nominations — outstanding directing for a drama series award for director Hwang Dong-hyuk and the outstanding lead actor in a drama series award for Lee.
Oh debuted as an actor in 1963. The actor made his first silver screen appearance in 1965 in “The Seashore Village” and was also in director Kim Ki-duk’s “Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring” (2003). Oh has been in some 200 plays and was largely known for his theater work until he was cast as player No. 1 in “Squid Game.” He recently performed in the play “Last Session,” which was staged in a theater in Daehangno in central Seoul. For his role in “Squid Game,” Oh won Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Supporting Role at the 79th annual Golden Globe Awards in January.
