Rallies continue in Thailand as court suspends prime minister amid term duration dispute

epa10143475 Protesters gather for a rally calling for the prime minister to step down amid his eight-year premiership legal dispute in Bangkok, Thailand, 28 August 2022. The Constitutional Court has ordered to suspend Thai Premier Prayut Chan-o-cha from duty until the final verdict about his eight-year tenure premiership. While opposition parties point out Prayut's eight-year term started when he assumed premiership in August 2014 after leading a coup d'etat, his supporters claim his tenure began with the enforcement of the new Constitution in April 2017. A third group says the eight years should instead be counted from the moment he was elected prime minister in the March 2019 elections. According to Thailand's Constitution, a prime minister should not hold office for more than eight years. EPA/NARONG SANGNAK
