Pre-orders for Hyundai Motor’s first all-electric sedan Ioniq 6 built on the mother platform E-GMP exceeded 37,000 on the first day of opening, the largest ever made in the history of the Korean automobile industry.

The South Korean automaker announced Tuesday that it booked total 37,446 pre-orders for the new arrival in the Ioniq series a day earlier, beating its previous 23,760 record for Ioniq 5 last year, as innovative exterior and interior design, long drive range and new technologies in a price range eligible for state subsidy appealed to customers.

Built on the group’s own EV-dedicated platform E-GMP, Ioniq 6 is capable of driving up to 524 kilometers on a single charge and boasts world’s top-level energy consumption rate of 6.2km/kWh and a drag coefficient of 0.21.

An aerodynamic design, user-optimized cabin, dynamic driving performance and high-tech safety and convenience features drew positive reviews from major automotive magazines like Auto Motor and Sport, Car and Driver and Auto Bild.

Ioniq 6 is available in two battery pack options of the standard 77.4 kWh version and the long-range 53 kWh version. The price was set at 52-61 million won ($45,654.12) to enable government subsidy.

Hyundai Motor shares closed unchanged at 189,000 won in Seoul trading on Tuesday.
