On August 19, North Korea rejected the “audacious initiative,” President Yoon Suk-yeol’s policy on North Korea which he mentioned in his address on National Liberation Day four days earlier. This day, Kim Yo-jong, a vice director of the Workers’ Party of Korea, criticized the “audacious initiative” as “the height of stupidity” and claimed that North Korea would never consider any offers from Seoul.
Kim, the younger sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un released a statement titled, “Don’t Dream Futile Dreams” through the Korean Central News Agency this day and said, “I don’t know what kind of flashy plan they (South Korea) will come up with in the future, but I declare that we will never consider them.”
She attacked the “audacious initiative” and said, “It is nothing new, but simply a copy of the ‘denuclearization, opening, 3,000,’ which the former rebel Lee Myung-bak presented over a decade ago.” Far from drawing the world’s attention, Lee’s policy was abandoned as the outcome of confrontation between the Korean people, argued Kim.
Kim continued to degrade President Yoon Suk-yeol’s audacious initiative claiming it was “the height of stupidity, as unrealistic as an attempt to dry the dark blue ocean to create a mulberry field.”
Her statement was full of vulgar expressions claiming the South’s attempt to “copy policies thrown in the sewage of history was absurd,” and that describing such an attempt as audacious was “truly foolish.”
She also said, “I don’t know if he knows that the premise ‘if the North ceases the development of its nuclear program’ is wrong.”
Kim argued that denuclearization was not something that could be negotiated and criticized the South’s attempt to exchange the North’s nuclear program, which she described as national polity, with economic cooperation as a “vain dream, hope and idea of Yoon Suk-yeol,” which made her realize that the South Korean president was still “naive and young.” She added, “Stop meddling with inter-Korean issues and worry about taking care of your own household if you have the time.”
She also mentioned President Yoon Suk-yeol and said, “Before we assess the South Korean government’s policies on North Korea, we just hate Yoon Suk-yeol as a human being.”
Kim also spoke about the announcement made by the South Korean military on August 17, notifying that North Korea had launched two cruise missiles from Onchon, South Pyongan Province that day. She said, “I state that the launch site of our weapons test was not Onchon, which the South Korean authorities hastily and poorly announced, but Kumsong Bridge in Anju, South Pyongan Province.”
In his National Liberation Day address on August 15, President Yoon Suk-yeol proposed an “audacious initiative” claiming to take political and military measures in addition to economic cooperation, such as providing food and support in infrastructure, in exchange for denuclearization measures from North Korea and urged Pyongyang for a positive response.
