Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong on Friday attended a groundbreaking ceremony for the company’s research and development (R&D) center at the Giheung Campus in Yongin, Gyeonggi.
Samsung plans to invest 20 trillion won ($15 billion) in establishing the 109,000-square-meter (1,173,266-square-foot) R&D complex at its Giheung Campus by 2028. The new facility includes a production line dedicated to R&D purposes, which will begin operations in 2025.
The R&D complex will serve as a research base for memory chips, system-on-chips, and foundry, said the company.
“We are embarking on a new challenge at the Giheung complex where we first broke ground 40 years ago to build a chip factory,” said Lee during the visit. “Samsung’s semiconductors wouldn't be here today without the bold R&D investments made for next-generation and next-next-generation products.”
Lee's attendance was his first official appearance since being granted a special presidential pardon by President Yoon Suk-yeol on Aug. 12.
Along with Lee, Kyung Kye-hyun, head of the device solution division, Lee Jung-bae, head of the memory business, Choi Si-young, head of foundry business and Park In-yong, head of the system-on-chip business, also attended the ceremony.
“We will create a virtuous cycle that will lead to the company’s growth, by offering diverse educational opportunities for the best research talents so that they can come and grow together,” said Kyung of the device solution division which oversees the whole chip businesses.
After the ceremony, Vice Chairman Lee visited Samsung Electronics’ Hwaseong Campus located near the Giheung Campus to attend an executive meeting to discuss the chip business.
