Roman military bath complex near Szony in Hungary

epa10127285 Pillars of a Roman military bath complex are shown near Szony, northwestern Hungary, 17 August 2022 (issued 18 August 2022). The legion camp, which was known as Brigetio by the ancient Romans, features well-preserved walls and floors made of red limestone slabs, pools and an early system of central heating known as a hypocaust. In a hypocaust, hot air and smoke from an adjacent wood-fuelled furnace would circulate in a shallow chamber below the floor tiles supported by pillars, called pilae stacks. Hypocausts were used for heating private villas, hot baths and other public buildings in Ancient Rome. The prospective World Heritage site was discovered in 1992, and since then a workshop for making late Roman bone combs, a gold necklace and dozens of bronze medals were also found. Brigetio is one of the two Roman legion camps so far discovered in Hungary, the current territory of which largely covering a northernmost province of the Roman Empire once called Pannonia.
