THE MAN WHO LAUGHS Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, Grand Theater

Through Aug. 22: Led by American theater director Robert Johanson, this musical is based on Victor Hugo’s 1869 novel of the same name. The musical has been praised for its stage design, put together by designer Oh Pil-young. The story is set in 17th-century England, where there was a huge gap between the rich and the poor.

The story revolves around the main character Gwynplaine and the unfair treatment he endures from society. For the upcoming production, singer Park Hyo-shin and musical actors Park Eun-tae and Park Kang-hyun alternate the role of Gwynplaine.

The musical starts at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays and at 4 p.m. on Sundays. There are no shows on Mondays.

Ticket prices range from 60,000 won ($45.80) to 150,000 won.

ELISABETHBlue Square, Shinhan Card HallAug. 25 – Nov. 13:“Elisabeth” is a musical fusion of fantasy and fiction based on the life of Elisabeth von Wittelsbach, the empress of Austria and queen of Hungary, from her childhood until her murder in 1898.

The show features Ock Joo-hyun, a former member of girl group Fin.K.L, who has played the role of Elisabeth in many productions. The upcoming show, produced by EMK Musical Company, is starring Ock once again to celebrate the 10th year of its premiere. She will alternate the roll with Lee Ji-hye.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays; 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays; 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays; and at 3 p.m. on Sundays.

There are no shows on Mondays.

Tickets range from 70,000 won to 150,000 won.

THE SHIN SEUNG-HUN SHOWSejong Center for the Performing Arts, Grand TheaterAug. 27 – 28:Singer-songwriter Shin Seung-hun, known in Korea as the “king of ballads” is holding a nationwide tour and will be stopping in Seoul’s Sejong Center on Aug. 27 and 28.

The concert was planned in 2020 to celebrate his 30th anniversary but was postponed due to the Covid-19 outbreak. The tour, dubbed, “Reflection of You in Your Smile,” is named after Shin’s first album released in 1991.

The show begins at 6 p.m.

Tickets range from 88,000 won to 154,000 won.

RAY CHEN & SUNWOO YEKWONSeoul Arts Center, Concert HallAug. 31: Violinist Ray Chen and pianist Sunwoo Yekwon will collaborate on stage for Mast Media’s Super Duo Series. Mast Media is Sunwoo’s Korean label. They will perform Grieg’s “Violin Sonata No. 2 in G Major, Op 13,” Poulenc’s “Violin Sonata, FP 119” and Franck’s “Violin Sonata in A Major.”

Sunwoo was the first Korean pianist to win the gold medal at the prestigious Van Cliburn International Competition in 2017. His latest album was “Mozart,” released early in 2020. Chen is a Taiwanese-Australian violinist. He won the 2009 Queen Elisabeth Competition.

Tickets range from 50,000 won to 120,000 won.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.

Aug. 31 – Sept. 4: “Rabbit’s Eight Sufferings” is a changgeuk, or Korean traditional opera performance, retelling the famous pansori (Korean traditional narrative singing) tale of “Sugung-ga.” It was written by acclaimed playwright Koh Sun-woong for the National Changgeuk Company. When it premiered last year, it was applauded by both critics and audience members.

The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. on weekdays and at 3 p.m. on weekends.

Tickets range from 20,000 won to 80,000 won.

Sept. 15: Maestro Chung Myung-whun will be holding a chamber music concert with young Korean musicians at the Seoul Arts Center in southern Seoul. He will conduct and also play the piano for one of the numbers.

The artists who will perform under Chung’s baton are cellist Song Young-hoon, double bassist Sung Min-je, pictured above, violinist Kim Su-yeon and violist Kim Sarah. They will perform Brahms’ “Piano Quartet No. 3 in C minor, Op. 60” and Schubert’s “Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667.”

Tickets range from 50,000 won to 130,000 won.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.

SUNGWON YANG & ENRICO PACELotte Concert HallSept. 29:Korean cellist Sungwon Yang and Italian pianist Enrico Pace will hold a duo recital, showcasing Beethoven’s Cello Sonata pieces.

“It will be a concert allowing audience members to really enjoy Beethoven’s music,” Lotte Cultural Foundation, the concert organizer, said. The two have performed together multiple times, playing Beethoven’s pieces. The program includes Beethoven’s Cello Sonata “No. 1 in F Major, Op. 5, No. 1,” “No. 2 in g minor, Op. 5, No. 2,” “No. 3 in A Major, Op. 69,” “No. 4 in C Major, Op. 102, No.1” and “No. 5 in D Major, Op. 102, No. 2.”

Tickets range from 40,000 won to 80,000 won.

SIR SIMON RATTLE & LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRALotte Concert HallOct. 14:Maestro Simon Rattle and the London Symphony Orchestra is visiting the Lotte Concert Hall for the first time in four years. Korea’s star pianist Cho Seong-jin will accompany them. The upcoming concert may be the last concert of the London Symphony under Rattle’s baton in Korea as the maestro will be leaving the orchestra after the 2023-24 season.

They’ll perform “La valse-poème chorégraphique pour orchestra” by Maurice Ravel, Bruckner’s “Symphony No. 7” and “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini” by Rachmaninoff.

Tickets range from 100,000 won to 400,000 won. Ticket sales will open from July 28 at 2 p.m.

KINKY BOOTSChungmu Art Center, Grand Theater Through Oct. 23:Charlie Price takes over the family business from his father and begins to run a shoe factory, but he soon realizes he is on the verge of bankruptcy. In a bid to find a breakthrough, the businessman unwillingly teams up with a drag performer named Lola to produce a line of high-heeled boots for other drag queens called "kinky boots."

Through the relationship between the unlikely pair, the musical spotlights how people from different backgrounds can come to understand each other.

For the upcoming Korean production, Lee Seok-hoon from the K-pop trio SG Wannabe, Kim Sung-kyu from the K-pop boy band Infinite and musical actor Shin Jae-bum will alternate the role of Charlie. As for the role of Lola, three musical actors — Choi Jae-lim Kang Hong-seok and Seo Kyung-soo — will alternate.

The musical starts at 7:30 p.m. from Tuesdays to Fridays, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekends and national holidays. There are no shows on Mondays.

Sindang Station, line No. 6, exit 9 HODONGNational Theater of Korea, Haeoreum Grand TheaterOct. 27 – 29: “Hodong” is a National Dance Company’s traditional dance performance based on the Korean folk tale “Princess Nakrang and Prince Hodong.” The performance, which features themes of war, love, betrayal and death, is a combination of modern techniques and classical sentiment. The legend of Princess Nakrang and Prince Hodong is a tragic love story from Korea’s Three Kingdoms period (57 B.C. to A.D. 668).

Tickets range from 20,000 won to 70,000 won.

The shows start at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
