South Korea’s Samsung Electronics has taken gaming monitors to the next level by unveiling the world’s first rotating 55-inch 1000R curved gaming monitor “Odyssey Ark” which delivers what the company professes to be an unparalleled immersive and cinematic experience.

Samsung Electronics on Tuesday released the Ark - the latest addition to its Odyssey monitor lineup - that boasts 4K resolution, 165Hz refresh rate, and 1ms response time, a combination that makes it the most advanced gaming monitor in the market.

The Ark’s Cockpit Mode allows the Ark display to be tilted horizontally to 90 degrees while the Multi View feature makes it possible for users to display up to four screens at once. The Flex Move Screen mode allows users to adjust the screen size and location, and supports all 16:9, 21:9, and 32:9 aspect ratios.

The monitor also uses Quantum Mini LEDs for local dimming with 14-bit processing that allows users to control the brightness and the contrast. The matte screen also prevents glare and reflections.

Samsung’s all-in-one game streaming platform, Samsung Gaming Hub, is already embedded in the monitor which enables users to stream cloud games without having to download and waste storage space.

“The gaming market will continue to grow regardless of Covid-19 or the economic recession,” said Chung Kang-il, the director of visual display at Samsung Electronics, during the media briefing for the Odyssey Ark launch.

Chung also said there is a high possibility of the company releasing even larger gaming screens in the future.

“The main strength of Samsung’s products is that all functions have been optimized exclusively for gaming,” said Chung, when asked about rival LG Electronics’ OLED-based gaming monitors where OLED televisions were designed for desktop gaming use. There has been “nothing decided yet” regarding the release of gaming screens with OLED monitors, Chung added.

The new product will be launched globally beginning in the UK. Domestic pre-orders will begin on August 24 and will be available for offline purchase at stores across the nation on September 7.

Shares of Samsung Electronics traded up 1.66 percent at 61,200 won ($46.77) on Tuesday afternoon.
