LG Group has fielded 50-something chiefs in command over innovation and new materials exploration.

The Korean conglomerate’s flagship LG Electronics was selected last year to lead the Working Group of the Next G Alliance until 2023, the industry initiative to advance wireless technology in 6G for the next decade and beyond in North America. The initiative was led by Kim Byung-hoon, the electronics giant’s 51-year-old CTO with strong background in 6G network technology.

The CTO is aggressively leading the company’s advancement in artificial intelligence and other new technologies. LG Electronics is currently working with its research institute affiliate on developing super-giant AI program, “EXAONE” as well as studying quantum computing as a member of IBM Quantum Network.

Other LG Group units are also moving aggressively for technological advancement.

LG Energy Solution has teamed up with a number of world’s leading research labs to develop next-generation rechargeable battery and advance production technology under its CTO, Shin Young-joon. Shin, 52, has vast experience in rechargeable battery business, from development to product planning and production.

LG Uplus, the wireless carrier unit, has built its R&D team stronger under CTO Lee Sang-yeop. Upon taking the control of the company’s technology team, Lee, 50, worked to boost in-house R&D capability. His latest feat is introducing the country’s first cloud-based paid TV service.

LG CNS CTO, Kim Sun-jung, 49, also expanded the IT solution service company’s R&D capability by reorganizing technology specialist team and adding AI labs.

The younger tech chiefs are communicating more freely with employees to stimulate creativity through various efforts from town hall meeting to community service project.
