삼성전자가 10일 밤(한국시간) 4세대 폴더블 신작을 전 세계에 공개하고 '1500만 폴더블폰' 대중화를 위한 도전을 시작했다. 글로벌 경기 위축에 인플레이션 압박까지 대내외 여건이 녹록지 않은 가운데 삼성은 갤럭시 Z플립4와 폴드4를 통해 올해 전 세계에 사상 첫 1000만대를 돌파하는 새 기록을 준비하고 있다.

Samsung Electronics has unveiled fourth-generation Galaxy Z Flip4 and Galaxy Z Fold4 in enhanced camera and player experience, multitasking, battery life, and display quality at capped prices to lead mass market in foldable handsets.

이날 공개한 폴더블(Z) 시리즈는 힌지(경첩) 기술 고도화를 통해 화면은 더 키우면서도 두께와 무게를 동시에 줄이는 혁신을 이뤄냈다.

The fourth generation combo builds on the success of Samsung's pioneering form factor, adding key features, including an advanced hinge technology, a larger display and slimmer and lighter designs. Camera capabilities have become a distinctive feature.

플립4 성능 개선은 전작 대비 카메라 관련 소프트웨어(SW)에 집중됐다. 클램셸 폴더블은 특히 사용자들에게 두 손이 자유로운 핸즈프리 상태에서 카메라를 사용할 수 있도록 차별화한 경험을 선사한다. 또한, 전작 대비 65% 더 밝은 센서가 장착된 카메라와 스냅드래곤 8+1세대 프로세서를 두뇌로 장착했다.

The clam shell Z Flip4 is crafted to go truly hands-free with a Flex mode. To satisfy young female consumers who want more perfect selfies in Flex mode, the upgraded camera is equipped with a 65 percent brighter sensor powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 Mobile Platform. The users are now able to take selfies by using the high-definition rear camera on the front display without ever opening the phone.

삼성은 카메라 사용자 경험을 극대화하기 위해 메타(옛 페이스북)와 협업했다. 인스타그램 '릴스' 촬영 때, 그리고 페이스북 영상 통화 때 플립의 플렉스 모드가 지원된다.

Samsung has collaborated with Meta to maximize this upgraded camera experience. The Flex mode is supported during a shooting for Instagram's Reels and Facebook video calls.

싱글 힌지 기술을 적용해 플립4를 접었을 때 접합부 두께가 전작보다 더 얇아지는 효과를 거뒀다.

With a single-hinge technology, the Z Fold4 has a slimmer joint than its predecessor when folded.

또 배터리가 너무 빨리 닳는다는 비판적 평가를 반영해 플립4는 전작보다 용량이 약 12% 커진 3700mAh 배터리를 탑재했다. 초고속 충전 기술도 적용, 25W 이상 충전기 사용 때 0% 충전 수준에서 30여 분 만에 최대 50%까지 충전할 수 있다.

Battery life has also been enhanced. The Fold4 is outfitted with the expanded 3,700mAh battery, 12 percent larger than its predecessor. With a super-fast charging system, the device can be charged up to 50 percent in around 30 minutes, keeping users connected when they are running low.

카운터포인트리서치에 따르면 지난해 전 세계 폴더블폰 출하량은 900만대 수준으로 이 중 삼성전자 점유율이 80%에 이르는 것으로 파악된다. 나머지 20%는 오포를 비롯한 중국 업체다. 중국 기업들의 거센 추격 속에 삼성은 올해를 폴더블폰 대중화의 출발점으로 삼고 기술•시장점유율 격차를 더욱 벌려야 하는 상황이다.

According to Counterpoint Research, global foldable phone shipments last year amounted to 9 million units, of which Samsung Electronics accounted for 80 percent. To maintain comfortable lead over fast rising Chinese competition, Samsung needs to widen the gap amid adverse conditions such as a growing currency headwind and economic downturn.
