SK nexilis develops ultra-high strength EV battery copper foil

SK nexilis Co., the copper foil making unit of South Korea¡¯s SKC, has succeeded in developing the technology required in the mass production of ultra-high-strength copper foil with a tensile strength of 65kgf/§± for the first time in the industry, the company said on Tuesday.

This means that the thin copper foil, a key material used in EV battery components, can withstand more than twice the pulling force compared to existing standard products, the company said.

High-strength copper foils are needed to enhance the EV battery¡¯s price competitiveness and battery capacity.

SK nexilis has a copper foil lineup called BEST, an acronym of battery, elongation, strength and thin foils to meet the diverse customer needs. The new product added to this lineup is initialized as U to mean ultra-strength and has higher tensile strength than S battery foil.

In addition, the high-strength copper foil has high heat resistance that can withstand high temperatures with no changes in its physical properties. Using this high-strength copper foil can reduce the risk of defects and improve productivity.

The company said its high-strength copper foil can be a good solution for the trend of battery capacity expansion, while reducing the risk of failure in the process.
