Marine Protected Areas (MPA) Day

Since 01 August 2021 globally this day is recognized as Marine Protected Areas (MPA) Day. There are 21 marine MPAs in South Africa promulgated under the Marine Living Resources Act No. 18 of 1998 (MLRA). The objectives of MPAs are to protect the marine life, facilitate fisheries management and reduce user conflict. In South Africa, the management of MPAs and fisheries is controlled by the same policy and legislation to help ensure that commercial and recreational use of the ocean is sustainable. Further MPA's are planned in alignment with the global marine environment goal of 30% of oceans marine reserves by 2030. EPA/NIC BOTHMA
