South Korea’s chip giant SK hynix has developed its first CXL (Compute Express Link) memory sample based on DDR5 DRAM chipset with the goal of mass-production next year to enable stronger performance and grater expansion in server capacity

The form factor of the sample—the size and configuration of the device—is EDSFF (Enterprise & Data Center Standard Form Factor) E3.S, which, equipped with a CXL controller, supports PCIe 5.0 x8 Lane and uses DDR5 standard DRAM. CXL based on PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) is a new standardized interface that can enhance the efficiency of CPU, GPU, accelerator, and memory, the world’s second largest DRAM maker said Monday in a press release.

The core of the CXL memory market is “expandability.” It is possible to flexibly expand the memory by complementing the limitations of the existing server market and better back sophisticated computing tasks employing artificial intelligence (AI) and big data.

The first CXL memory developed by the firm is a 96GB product using the latest technology node 1anm DDR5 24Gb. The chipmaker expects that the memory configuration using its product will increase bandwidth and capacity, expanding customer satisfaction.

“CXL is a new opportunity to create a new market. We aim to start mass production by 2023. In addition, we will develop cutting-edge DRAM technologies and advanced packing technologies to launch various CXL-based bandwidth/ capacity expandable memory solution products,” said Kang Uk-song, vice president of SK hynix. With its new achievement, the firm will collaborate with various global firms, such as Dell and Intel, to expand the CXL memory ecosystem.

SK hynix shares were down 0.2 percent to 97,800 won in the early session on Monday.
