The past few years saw a decrease in the total watermelon production area, which is compensated by advanced irrigation technology and the correct selection of cultivars that thrive in strong sunshine. In Hungary, melons are typically grown in the open field, but greenhouse cultivation is catching on also to cut down on imports by extending the growing season, the main competitors of domestic producers being Italy, Spain and Greece.
