LG U+ will co-develop advanced wireless network technologies with Finland’s Nokia, the telecom company said Wednesday.

The companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to co-develop techniques related to advanced 5G and 6G communication technologies, with a focus on the expansion of network, bandwidth and service zone, according to LG U+.

The companies plan to conduct research on Open Radio Access Networks, or Open-Ran. The Open-Ran technology will allow more flexibility for mobile carriers in the network connection setup in the future, explained LG U+.

Open-Ran is a concept that allows telecom operators to mix and match components of a network system from multiple vendors by using open and interoperable interfaces.

The companies will also develop energy harvesting technology, which is used to ensure a stable long-term power supply for wireless sensor networks, and also next-generation antenna technology for 6G communication.

“In order to achieve the level of service quality that can satisfy the clients, it is necessary to upgrade the 5G network while thoroughly preparing for 6G networks as well,” said Kwon Jun-hyuk, who is heading the network unit of LG U+.

“The deal allowed us to strengthen the partnership with Nokia,” said Kwon.

“The technological collaboration between the two companies in 4G and 5G network technologies will be enhanced in 5G Advanced and 6G,” said Ahn Tae-ho, head of Nokia Korea. “We are expecting that the collaboration will help test and develop future wireless network technology, and would eventually speed up the commercialization of the service.”
