Renewable energy generation up trifold in ten years in Korea

Renewable energy generation, such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power, reached 43,085GWh in South Korea in 2021, making up its record high 7.5% in the country’s entire power generation, up three times from a decade ago thanks to the government’s aggressive move to cut greenhouse gas emissions. The proportion of liquified petroleum gas (LPG), the least emitter of greenhouse gas among fossil fuels, also added 6.5%points from 2011 to 29.2% in 2021. On the other hand, the ratio of coal-fired power, the biggest emitter of carbon dioxide, reduced from 40.8% to 34.3% during the same period, while nuclear power generation dropped from 31.1% to 27.4% despite an 2.1% increase in generation volume to 158,015GWh.
