However, the show is not officially distributed. Most viewers watch it using the "dark path." Netflix and Disney Plus are also in the same situation. Lately, Marvel movies have been blocked as well. The latest Doctor Strange movie has been banned from being screened, as it includes a newspaper published by Falun Gong, which has been identified as a cult, on a news stand. Disney CEO Bob Chapek recently said that the company would have little problem with the box office without the Chinese market.

China is shifting responsibility and argues that Marvel movies have turned into an ideological and political tool of the new Cold War. Can "My Liberation Notes" enter China? The tears of the three Yeom siblings and Mr. Gu coincide with what Chinese people now call "leeks," which continue to grow no matter how much you cut off. It is connected to the "Tang Ping" phenomenon in China, meaning "choose to lie flat and get over the beatings." The message of "My Liberation Notes" goes beyond "Tang Ping."

In fact, liberation is what the ruling party in China likes to refer to. The military is called the Liberation Army, not the Chinese army. The civil war with the Kuomintang is called the War of Liberation. Liberation has expanded after opening and reform. China advocated ideological liberation, calling people to abandon all stereotypes. The liberation of ideology broke the strain of the emperor's rule that lasted more than 2,000 years. After a flood of innovation and creativity, China became the second largest economy in the world.

However, the situation reversed a few years ago. "Unification of ideology" replaced liberation of ideology. Innovation decreased, and the door of opportunity closed. Tang Ping spread. Another keyword in "My Liberation Notes" is worship. Online viewers translated it as "admiration." The parallels between liberation and admiration are ironic.

I explored the reviews on Chinese social media. I found some sad reactions from viewers in Shanghai in lockdown for over 50 days now. Liberation Daily, the name of the party newspaper in Shanghai, over-laps with "My Liberation Notes."'

단 정식 유통은 아니다. 대부분 ‘어둠의 경로’를 이용한다. 넷플릭스·디즈니 플러스 모두 같은 신세다. 최근에는 할리우드 마블 영화까지 막혔다. ‘닥터 스트레인지 2’ 개봉이 금지됐다. 사교로 규정한 파룬궁(法輪功)이 발행하는 신문이 가판대에 놓여있는 게 노출돼서다. 밥 차펙 디즈니 최고경영자(CEO)는 최근 “중국 시장 없어도 흥행에 문제없다”며 탈중국을 말했다.

중국은 책임을 떠넘겼다. 마블 영화가 신냉전의 이념·정치적 도구로 전락했다고 주장한다. 환구시보는 엊그제 칼럼에서 차펙 발언을 ‘디커플링(탈동조화)’ 선언이라고 했다. 넷플릭스의 부진을 예로 들며 중국 시장 없이 성장은 힘들다고 했다. 국적 불문 꽉 닫은 ‘인터넷 만리장성’은 말하지 않았다.

‘해방일지’는 중국에 입성할 수 있을까. 극 중 염씨 삼남매와 구씨의 땀은 이곳 신조어 ‘부추’와 겹친다. “베어도 베어도 자라는 대체 가능한 존재”가 부추다. 당하느니 평평하게 드러눕겠다는 ‘당평(躺平·중국식 발음은 탕핑) 현상’과 연결된다. ‘해방일지’의 메시지는 당평을 넘어선다.

사실 해방은 중국 집권당 전공이다. 군대도 국군 아닌 해방군으로 부른다. 국민당과 내전은 해방전쟁이라고 한다. 해방은 개혁개방 이후 외연을 넓혔다. 모든 고정관념을 버리라며 사상해방을 외쳤다. 2000여년 황제 지배의 질곡을 사상해방이 부쉈다. 혁신과 창조 봇물이 터졌다. 세계 2위 경제 대국으로 올라섰다.

하지만 몇 해 전부터 상황이 역전됐다. 사상해방의 자리를 ‘사상통일’이 차지했다. 혁신이 줄었다. 기회의 문은 닫혔다. 당평이 퍼졌다. ‘해방일지’의 또 다른 키워드는 추앙이다. 네티즌 자막팀은 ‘숭배’로 번역했다. 숭배와 해방의 병렬은 아이러니다. 대만은 해방을 ‘탈출(出走)’로 바꿨다.

중국 SNS의 관람평을 살폈다. 50일 넘게 봉쇄 중인 상하이 팬의 반응이 애잔했다. 상하이시 당 기관지 제호인 ‘해방일보’와 ‘해방일지’가 겹쳐 보인 탓이다.
