Korea won five gold, one silver and one bronze medal at the Gwangju 2022 Hyundai Archery World Cup. Two of the gold medals were from compound events, while the others were won in recurve events.
Unlike the Olympics, the Archery World Cup holds compound competitions as well as recurve competitions. Compound archers use a slightly different bow and shoot at a closer range than recurve archers.
Kim Jong-ho, Yang Jae-won and Choi Yong-hee of the Korean men’s compound team were the ones to win the bronze medal, beating Denmark 238-229. The bronze medal marked the first medal of the event.
The medals kept piling on as Kim Yun-hee, Song yun-soo, So Chae-won and Oh Yoo-hyun of the women’s compound team beat Estonia 232-228 to win gold.
Kim Yun-hee then went on to win her second gold medal, beating Andrea Munoz of Spain 141-137 in the compound women’s individual gold medal event.
In the recurve events, Korea won both the men’s and women’s recurve team gold medals. Choi Mi-sun, An San and Lee Ga-hyun beat Germany 5-1 in the women’s recurve team finals after beating Turkey 5-4 in the quarterfinal and India 6-2 in the semifinal.
Choi Mi-sun went on to beat countrywoman Lee Ga-hyun to win the recurve women’s individual gold medal. Lee Ga-hyun won silver.
Kim Je-deok, Lee Woo-seok and Kim Woo-jin were the ones to win the men’s recurve team gold medal, beating Italy 6-0. Korea beat Kazakhstan 5-4 in the quarterfinals and Spain 6-2 in the semifinals to reach the finals.
Kim Woo-jin went on to win the men’s recurve individual gold, beating countryman Lee Woo-seok 7-1 on Sunday. Lee Woo-seok won silver.
Korea missed out on the podium in three events: The men’s individual compound; compound mixed team where Korea finished seventh; and recurve mixed team, where Korea finished sixth.
