UK Fishing Industry

The fish industry in the UK is facing problems with a mixture of post-Brexit regulations and logistical barriers as well as the effects of oil and fish supplies because of the war in Ukraine. Russian vessels which catch Cod and Haddock are threaten with tariffs in the UK. This has caused a rise in prices and a scarcity for those fish as well as a knock-on rise in price and demand for other fish substitutes. The National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) claims that since the outbreak of war in the Ukraine makers of the national British dish of fish and chips have had to close, raise prices or change their menus. 40 percent of white fish that comes into Britain is from Russian vessels and the majority of the world's crops for sunflower oil is grown in Ukraine. There is further uncertainty in the industry as the EU could impose tariffs on UK fish and agricultural goods in response to any moves by Boris Johnson to disapply parts of the Northern Ireland Brexit protocol.
