The Korean national team won the men's compound team bronze medal on Wednesday at the Gwangju 2022 Hyundai Archery World Cup.
Kim Jong-ho, Yang Jae-won and Choi Yong-hee of Korea beat Mathias Fullerton, Martin Damsbo and Stephan Hansen of Denmark 238-229 to win Korea’s first medal at the event. The first end finished 59-58, the second end finished 119-114, the third end finished 178-170 and the fourth end finished 238-229.
Unlike the Olympics, the Archery World Cup holds compound competitions as well as recurve competitions.
Compound archers use a slightly different bow and shoot at a closer distance than recurve archers. Kim Jong-ho, Yang, Choi and Kang Dong-hyeon are competing in the men's compound events while Kim Yun-hee, Song yun-soo, So Chae-won and Oh Yoo-hyun are competing in the women's compound events.
The women’s compound team have set themselves up for either silver or gold, as they have advanced to the gold medal match after beating India 230-228 in the semifinals. The women’s team will face Estonia, who beat Turkey in the semifinals, in the final on Saturday.
The recurve men’s and women’s team matches are scheduled to start on Thursday. Four men — Kim Woo-jin, Oh Jin-hyek, Kim Je-deok and Lee Woo-seok — and four women — Kang Chae-young, An San, Lee Ga-hyun and Choi Mi-sun — will compete in the recurve events.
Kim Woo-jin, Oh and Kim Je-deok are all part of the men’s national team that won gold at the 2020 Tokyo Games. Kang and An won the women’s team gold at the Games as well. An also made history becoming the first archer to win three gold medals at an Olympic Games — the mixed team gold, the women’s team gold and the women’s individual gold.
Korea entered the World Cup with the hopes of sweeping all compound and recurve gold medals. Even though those hopes have been dashed, Korea will still be aiming for a recurve podium sweep.
The Gwangju 2022 Hyundai Archery World Cup runs through Sunday.
