Scrap metal export ban in South Africa

epaselect epa09941855 The derelict Kliptown Railway Station after metal scavengers stole all of the copper cabling as well as overhead power cables in and around the station in Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa, 12 May 2022. The Kliptown station has effectively been closed and all that is left is the brick shell of what was once a thriving metro station. Entire stations in the city have been stolen with only broken brick walls left behind as desperation forces unemployed to steal the stations infrastructure. Only three of the 17 railway lines in the country's biggest city are still running and its because of the ongoing stealing of mostly metal by 'metal scavengers' who are desperate to make money as unemployment in South Africa reaches 35 percent due to a combination of years of economic downturns coupled with the negative effect of the strict COVID-19 lockdown that has already lasted 200 days. South Africa's Public enterprises minister Pravin Gordhan has called for a ban on the export of scrap metal, arguing that allowing such shipments is seriously damaging public infrastructure and the economy.
