South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Corp. last month have earned certificate of the cyber security and management system (CSMS) to meet the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) regulation R-155 for new car releases from July this year, raising expectations for sales growth in the world’s largest eco-friendly vehicle market of Europe.

They are the sole non-European finished car makers who won the certificate outside European makers Daimler and Volkswagen.

The UNECE regulation that requires the operation of a certified CSMS for the entire life cycle of a vehicle is mandatory for approval of new vehicles from July in Europe. It is to address growing security risk from increasing connectivity and digitized environment.

Hyundai Motor and Kia formed a cyber security task force team with staff of various divisions and employees dispatched from affiliated units like Hyundai AutoEver and Hyundai Mobis in response to the adoption of the stricter regulation in 2020.

As the rule required security management for supply chains, the TF team have carried out inspection of cyber security management system of major suppliers of automotive controllers like LG, Mando, Yura, Kyungshin and Continental.

Hyundai Motor and Kia started their study on automotive cyber security by hiring white hackers and computer security experts in 2015.

“With strengthened preemptive measures, Hyundai and Kia will be able to cement their position also in the Northeast Asian auto market,” said an industry official.
