People in South Korea are recommended to refrain from travelling during the Lunar New Year holiday unless necessary to slow the spread of the Omicron variant and ease the burden on hospitals, Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum urged during a national address on Monday, citing the explosive growth in Omicron infections across the nation. Those who have to travel during the holidays are strongly encouraged to get their third shot of the Covid-19 vaccine and to get tested, the PM added. Interior Minister Jeon Hae-cheol’s announcement earlier today that the omicron variant is now the dominant Covid strain in South Korea, making up 50.3% of new cases last week.
