Samsung Electronics is sponsoring a new major at Korea University.

Established at the School of Electrical Engineering, the course of study will be offered at Anam-dong, northern Seoul, campus from 2023.

The Next-generation Telecommunications major will include classes in communication networks, including 6G, Samsung Electronics said Monday.

Students accepted into the program will have their tuitions covered by Samsung Electronics and will be guaranteed work at Samsung Electronics without having to take the notoriously difficult GSAT exam, according to the company.

They are not obligated to work for the company.

Students will get the opportunity to intern at Samsung Electronics and participate in various overseas conferences related to IT.

"We established a telecommunication-dedicated major in order to foster talent suitable for telecommunications industry where hardware and software are merged," said Jeon Kyung-hoon, president of Samsung Electronics responsible for the network division.

"We will support it actively in order to generate new value for next-generation telecommunications."

Samsung Electronics signed similar partnerships last year with Seoul National University and Pohang University of Science and Technology, where the two universities agreed to establish a new undergraduate major dedicated to telecommunications.

"With a combination of Korea University's excellent educational resources and Samsung Electronics' world-class technology, we hope this partnership will produce top-notch talent and solid research," said Korea University President Chung Jin-taek.
