BTS has sold more than a million copies of its Japanese compilation album “BTS, The Best” (2021), making the band the first non-Japanese artist in over 16 years to become a million-seller.
According to Japan’s Oricon chart on Thursday, “BTS, The Best” sold around 3,000 copies between Dec. 27, 2021 and Jan. 2. The accumulated sales for the album, which dropped in June last year, reached 1,002,000 copies.
“The last time a foreign artist became a million-seller on the albums chart was [Korean singer] BoA, 16 years and 7 months ago,” wrote Oricon on its official website. BoA’s 2005 compilation album “Best of Soul” sold nearly 1.1 million copies.
The feat also makes BTS the 14th non-Japanese artist to sell over a million copies in Oricon history, and the second K-pop act to do so.
“BTS, The Best” is a collection of BTS’s hits released in Japan between 2017 and early 2021. It sold 782,000 copies in the first week after its release. As a result, BTS ranked No. 1 on Oricon’s annual rankings for 2021.
