JLK, a South Korean medical AI service provider, has launched the country’s first AI-based telemedicine service with two domestic hospitals for overseas Koreans, allowing them to receive medical services without visiting clinics in home country.

The company whose remote diagnosis platform and business model passed a regulatory sandbox review in May recently signed a contract with Korea University Anam Hospital and Gachon University Gil Hospital over the introduction of its telemedicine system.

JLK said its telemedicine system is designed to increase work efficiency for physicians and convenience for patients as it not only supports voice and video calls but also AI-based reading of medical images.

For instance, a patient who suspects pneumonia takes an X-ray at a hospital in a foreign country, but the patient may not receive enough medical services due to the absence of a specialist there. In this case, JLK’s telemedicine system can play a vital connecting role between the patient and physicians in Korea.

When the X-ray image taken locally is transmitted to the company’s online platform, its medical tool AI analyzes the image and generates a report which is then sent to a specialist in Korea. The specialist can make a video call with the patient on the platform that meets medical image standards and provide necessary care according to the analysis results.

The global telemedicine market size was $30.5 billion last year, and its annual growth rate was 14.7 percent between 2015 and 2021, according to data from the Federation of Korean Industries.
