Samsung Electronics Co.’s foundry and dehumidifier maker AT ENG Co. were among this year’s corporate winners of government-backed Jang Young-shil Award, celebrating its 30th year as South Korea’s most prestigious industrial technology recognition.

The IR52 Jang Young-shil Award hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and co-sponsored by Maeil Business Newspaper and Korea Industrial Technology Association on Monday held a commemorative ceremony to mark its 30th anniversary at Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas Hotel in Seoul.

Special government medals were handed out to Park Jae-hong, executive vice president of Samsung Electronics’ foundry business, Park Seung-tae, CEO of AT ENG and Choi Woo-chan, chief researcher at Dongkuk Steel Mill Co., recognizing their innovative achievements.

Samsung’s vice president Park awarded with the Order of Science and Technology Merit was recognized for his contribution of narrowing the technology gap with global foundry leader TSMC of Taiwan by developing the world’s best mobile application processor and establishing a cooperative ecosystem.

AT ENG CEO Park received the Science and Technology Medal for developing and mass-producing the country’s first hybrid dehumidifier, which is twice as energy efficient than existing dehumidifiers while saving energy consumption by more than 40 percent. The company also contributed to the automobile battery industry through its twin rotor dry room dehumidifier.

Chief researcher Choi of local steel maker Dongkuk Steel Mill was honored with a presidential citation for developing high-valued color steel plates.

Winners of prime minister’s commendation included Hyundai Motor, chemical materials company Ventex and robot fish manufacturer AIRO.

In tandem with the 30th anniversary ceremony, awards for the 18th through 52nd week of this year as well as last year’s grand prize were presented.

The IR52 Jang Young-shil Award, which was set up in 1991 in the honor of Jang Young-shil, one of the greatest scientists in Korean history, honors distinguished technology research outcomes achieved by Korean companies. It is given to one product every week for 52 weeks per year. The Award has discovered more than 1,600 innovative technologies in the past 30 years.
