Korean singer-turned-artist Solbi wins Barcelona international art awards' grand prize

Singer-turned-artist Kwon Ji-an, better known by her stage name Solbi, has won the top award at 2021 Premi Internacional d’Art de Barcelona (PIAB).

Kwon was named the Grand Artist Award winner at the international art awards held in Barcelona last Saturday.

“Her vigorous creativity and originality were highly regarded by the judges and she showed the most differentiated aspect among all," said Robert Llimós, one of seven judges for this year’s PIAB awards.

Kwon is exhibiting 13 artworks including her painting series “Just a Cake – Piece of Hope” at the Maritime Museum of Barcelona upon invitation by the Fira Internacional d'Art de Barcelona (FIABCN).

The PIAB is an annual international artistic prize organized by FIABCN in collaboration with Juve y Camps, Royal Talens, and Taschen. Past PIAB grand prize winners include August Vilella, a Spanish contemporary artist well known for surreal paintings. Kwon, like other award-winning artists, will exhibit her works at the world’s renowned art fairs and galleries.

Kwon, who made a public debut as K-pop singer, has become one of the country’s celebrated fine artists with her works recording high bids and sell-outs at art auctions.

In Seoul, she will hold a solo exhibition at Gallery Now from Dec. 6 to Jan. 6.
