The South Korean mission to the United Nations (UN) has kicked off a campaign to seek for a non-permanent member seat at the UN Security Council (UNSC) for a third time for 2024-2025 period. It invited diplomatic representatives to a reception at a hotel in Manhattan, New York, on Friday (local time), and Korean Ambassador to the UN Cho Hyun asked for support for South Korea’s joining UNSC as non-permanent member. South Korea served as non-permanent UNSC member in 1996 and 2013. Chance for Korea to become the member for a third time is high but some are opposing it by arguing that Seoul has been reluctant to intervene human rights issues in North Korea.
