2021 in the US began with one of the darkest days in the country?s recent history, as a mob of pro-Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in a failed attempt to overturn the results of the presidential election, in which Democrat Joe Biden beat Donald Trump. The fallout from that day continues, as Democrats investigate and accuse Trump, others in his circle as well as his supporters of attempting an insurrection. Since taking office in January, Joe Biden has struggled to unify the country, while a year on from the killing of 39-year-old African American man George Floyd by a white police officer, an event which helped spark the Black Lives Matter movement, the officers involved were found guilty of his murder. That case, as well as the murder trial of teenager Kyle Rittenhouse and of the accused killers of Ahmaud Arbery, were highly controversial and highlighted the bitter divide that exists in the US.
