Oppressive regimes made their presence felt across Asia this year, as Beijing imposed its authority on Hong Kong, which had been the scene of massive popular protests in 2019, with the National Security Law effectively banning all forms of dissent, in a hammer blow for democracy in the city-state. The year also saw president Xi Jinping solidify his power at home and that of his country in the international arena. China's neighbor to the south, Myanmar, also saw a bloody crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators protesting a military coup in February. In Thailand, the government targeted the leaders of student-led protests against the prime minister and monarchy with heavy prison terms. Further west, war-torn Afghanistan descended into chaos as the Taliban swept to power after foreign troops pulled out of the Himalayan country. Many were surprised by the speed and ferocity of the Islamist militants' resurgence, which unleashed a humanitarian disaster. In chaotic scenes, urban Afghans, many of whom had enjoyed relative freedom under the Western-backed democratic government of the past two decades or had worked with the foreign forces, desperately tried to flee on some of the last remaining flights out of Kabul Airport.
