Haevy rains and floods in Chennai

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for heavy rainfalls expected in several districts of Tamil Nadu and including Chennai for the coming days as a cyclonic circulation lies over the Comorin area and adjoining Sri Lanka coasts. At least five people had died due to the recent heavy rains and thousands were shifted to relief centers in the state of Tamil Nadu. Several suburban areas around Chennai are inundated in floodwater. Rescue teams started evacuating people from waterlogged residential areas. The state government has declared holidays for educational institutions in several districts as IMD predicts more rains.
