Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics, two Korean makers neck and neck in the premium TV market with differing display panels, have expanded their battle to high-definition contents.

Samsung Electronics said Thursday that it has completed testing High Dynamic Range 10+ (HDR10+) video conversion software with CJ OliveNetworks Co., IT solution provider under entertainment giant CJ Group.

HDR10+, developed and promoted by Samsung Electronics, is open standards for high-definition video technology. It is used to improve color range and brightness, thus making videos more vivid and lifelike. For application, the technology needs to be applied to not only TV but also video content.

Samsung Electronics started implementing HDR technology to its TV lineup with its 2018 QLED TV model.

Its technology contests with Dolby Vision, software created by audio and imaging products maker Dolby Laboratories. LG Electronics chose to go with Dolby Vision, applying the HDR technology to its TVs starting with 2016 OLED TV.

Since HDR10+ and Dolby Vision are equal in high-definition technology, video content holds the key to leadership.

Samsung Electronics has been distributing its HDR10+ software free of charge for wider adoption of its standards. To showcase the technology, Samsung Electronics worked with CJ OliveNetworks to add HDR metadata to Voice, thriller movie distributed by CJ ENM, using HDR10+ software. The HDR version of the movie is to be made available via Tving and other major video streaming platforms.

LG Electronics is also teaming up with more video contents production and streaming partners.

The company is offering a three-month trial service for Apple TV+, on-demand video streaming service launched by American tech giant Apple, to its TV customers. Apple TV+ carries a selection of Dolby Vision-applied HDR content.
