Volvo Group is riding on South Korea’s smart engagement in urban development through its advanced automation system.

The Korean unit of Swedish multinational construction equipment manufacturer Volvo Group on Monday demonstrated its advanced construction automation system involving remotely controlled heavy equipment during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Sejong Smart City Project, the company announced Tuesday.

The Sejong Smart City Project is constructing Sejong zone 5-1, a model smart city designed by the government, in Sejong, the de facto administrative capital of South Korea.

Volvo Group Korea earlier signed a technical partnership agreement with Korea Land and Housing Corporation for the smart city construction project.

Under agreement, the company is to operate eight advanced construction equipments – two 22-ton electric excavators, one 30-ton tele operation excavator, and five 5-ton autonomous load carriers. The advancement equipments can be remotely controlled real time via 5G network, thus help improving safety and productivity in construction sites, said the company.

The company will also utilize Volvo Active control and other machine guidance solutions that allow unskilled operators to easily control the construction equipments.

“We already have a set of future-oriented technologies that were proved to work through the successful test on the world’s first remote controlled excavators using 5G and the collaboration with a Swedish construction company for electric power project. Based on this experience, we will contribute to innovate construction technologies in South Korea,” said Andrew Knight, the managing director of Volvo Group Korea.
