LG Chem is partnering with Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (Unist) to develop technologies related to sustainability and future growth.

LG Chem announced Sunday it signed a memorandum of understanding with Unist on Friday to conduct joint research on carbon neutrality, biomass, battery materials and artificial intelligence.

Catalyst technology used to convert carbon for carbon capture and utilization will be developed, along with technology to manufacture bio-plastics using microorganisms.

Research and development for cathode materials, which increase battery capacities, will be conducted. A lab specializing in autonomous driving technologies will be established.

LG Chem announced in July it will invest 10 trillion won ($8.5 billion) in businesses dealing with battery parts, eco-friendly materials and drugs.

“LG Chem will work closely with Unist to procure outstanding talent through the Carbon Neutral Convergence Center scheduled to open in 2022, which has strengths in research fields related to next-generation energy and advanced new materials to secure ESG-based proprietary technology as a new growth engine for the company,” said Yu Ji-yung, chief technology officer of LG Chem.
