Team Korea on self-driving launched with major players like Hyundai Motor, Kakao, KT

Hyundai Motor Co., Kakao Mobility Corp. KT Corp. and other competitive players in their respective fields have officially launched a council on autonomous vehicle industry to ensure Korean headway in the age of future mobility.

The Korea Autonomous Industry Association was inaugurated on Wednesday under the blessing of the government.

Cho Sung-hwan, CEO of the country’s leading mobility company Hyundai Mobis Co., is the inaugurating chief, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

Established through a public-private partnership, the association aims to put together resources from leading players across various areas to provide a kick to the country’s self-driving industry.

The founding members total more than 60 companies from automobile, IT, service and platform industries including Hyundai Mobis, Kakao Mobility, Mando Mobility Solutions, and SK’s car-sharing service SoCar.

“In order to take the lead in the global autonomous driving market, joint efforts between the public and private sectors are urgently needed,” a government official said, adding that the government has pledged to actively communicate with the association and the broader industry and provide support for R&D activities to build and groom autonomous driving ecosystem.
