S. Korea's kimchi exports up 14% in Jan-Aug, marking trade surplus in 12 yrs

South Korea’s exports of staple side dish kimchi reached $114.6 million, adding 13.8% on year in the first eight months of this year on growing demand for immune boost food amid Covid-19 on top of K-pop’s international popularity that has increased interest in Korean culture and food. Kimchi imports came to $86.1 million, off 9.7 percent on year, resulting in a surplus of $25.36 million. This year would mark the first year to post the country’s kimchi trade surplus in 12 years if kimchi exports continue to rise at the current pace. Some researchers said ferment kimchi can help strengthen human body’s immune system.
