Lee Jae-myung, governor of Gyeonggi Province, has become the presidential candidate for the ruling Democratic Party on Sunday, defeating his rival Lee Nak-yon, former Prime Minister. Lee, who won 719,905 votes or 50.29% in the 11-round primary that ended on Sunday, will represent the DP in the presidential election on Mar. 9, 2021.

In the acceptance speech following his nomination, Lee promised intensive reforms to introduce universal basic income and to tackle the runaway housing prices. "The upcoming election is the ultimate battle against the corrupt establishment," he said.

Lee recently has been embroiled in a controversial property scandal surrounding the development project in Daejang-dong of Seongnam city that goes back to the years when he served as the mayor of Seongnam in 2010-2018.
