LG Elec tries its hand in artwork restoration as it works on Gogh¡¯s Vineyards at Arles

LG Electronics is supporting a Russian artwork restoration team to help clean up and retouch ¡®Vineyards at Arles¡¯, a famous painting by 19th-century master painter Vincent van Gogh, as part of its commitment to the preservation of world cultural heritage.

The Korean tech giant said on Thursday it is providing equipment and financial support for the team dedicated to the restoration project, adding its involvement will contribute to strengthening global marketing in the field of culture and art for LG Signature premium products.

The 133-year-old artwork now stored at the Pushkin Museum in Moscow entered restoration in August.

LG Electronics said it will work together with Russian video streaming service firm IVI to create documentaries on the restoration process and its significance, which will be shown to the public from October through LG Signature¡¯s official website, YouTube and other social media channels.

When van Gogh drew this painting in 1888, he used some paint containing lead chromate, which causes color changes in the exposure to ultraviolet light. As a result, discoloration and cracks in the work occurred when it was moved from place to place during the Russian Bolshevik Revolution and World War II.

The painting has never been taken out of the Pushkin Museum since its first exhibition in 1948 to minimize damage.

Restoration work will be completed by the end of this year. The painting whose insurance value is estimated to be over $80 million will be re-opened to the public during Morozov Collection to be held in the main pavilion of the Pushkin Museum early next year.
